OND SAUNA Walls of Neutrality
Walls of Neutrality In saunas, strangers share close space, yet true intimacy is rare in Japan. Proximity varies from personal to public, but public saunas have yet to foster a communal feel. By designing a sociopetal space that respects Japanese sensibilities, we can create a shared, non-intrusive environment. A wall that is both attached and detached helps balance intimacy. Its verticality echoes the forest, and its gaps draw nature inward while subtly regulating closeness. Implementing this in a PARK-PFI project reimagines public space and community interaction.
