In 1931, Stalin went to the western Georgian city of Tskaltubo for treatment. He was deeply impressed by the natural beauty and healing waters, and ordered the design and construction of a large resort town there. The center has become a huge park with pavilions, towers, and natural radon springs inside. The construction of sanatoriums began around this park, and eventually a total of 19 sanatoriums were built. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, sanatoriums began to slowly decline. The once magnificent palace buildings were empty, but now they are in ruins.
