This project transforms two dilapidated motels situated along Sierra Highway in Lancaster, CA, into a park-like community. Architects were tasked with quickly converting underperforming motels to interim housing, inspiring residents to describe their new home as “…the best place I’ve ever been.” Small rooms and extreme conditions led to the creation of solar porches that double the living area and provide shade. Parking was relocated and replaced by a vibrant park. The new grounds feature colorful walkways that intuitively connect the formerly disparate spaces into one cohesive campus.
