Manchester's Wall of Energy, designed by Tonkin Liu Architects, is clad in bespoke terracotta tiles manufactured locally by Darwen Terracotta. The tiles are flat at the bottom of the wall and swell into ever-increasing waves towards the top, formed from a series of bespoke cast products. I visited the factory where I recorded the manufacturing process: pouring the liquid material into plaster moulds, hand-finishing, spraying and finally firing. The resulting wall is a strikingly sculptural intervention.
