Rather than demolishing a 1970s timber house, we chose to inherit it as our own home and studio. We seismically strengthened the existing columns and beams and kept them as the skeleton, removing almost all interior partitions to form a single continuous space. Zoning is created not by walls but by floor level, material and movable textiles, letting work, daily life and hosting overlap. A restrained palette of timber, plaster and tiles keeps the original frame as the protagonist. As designers, owners and residents, this renovation is our alternative to demolition.
