A real-world design-build project sited in a Virginian formal garden, Garden Party is an outdoor pavilion providing gathering, dining, and classroom space for both large groups and individuals. The project is fabricated entirely from raw logs using a robotic sawmill to produce two systems—a trellis and bands of furniture. The concept of a picnic blanket/basket drives the design at three scales: boards are ‘woven’ together for screens and furniture, screens and furniture bands intersect in a grid in plan, and the picnic structures activity through meals and conversation in a garden.
