In Daren, Taitung, three public buildings for Eastern Paiwan villages challenge the standardized community centre typology. Rather than enclosing village life in a box, they place it at the open corridors, external stairs, covered courts, and halls extending into the landscape. Textured concrete, perforated brick, bamboo and stone form a resilient envelope against earthquakes and typhoons. It provides shelter, while deliberately leaving space for the villages to define their own identity. The apertures become invitations for local art, lineage and collective memory to emerge over time.
