Torpedo Factory and Wirra Birra Park / Thurston Empson
The Torpedo Factory and Wirra Birra Park complete the Harbour Trust’s transformation of Sub Base Platypus. The site has had a variety of uses, from a gasworks in 1876, then naval use from 1942. A single cut, traced from the buried quarry geometry below removed one-third of the 1942 factory structure to form Wirra Birra Park, while adaptively reusing the remaining two-thirds as a multi-use interpretive public concourse. A ‘nothing leaves the site’ approach remediated material in place, with endemic planting and indigenous artist Dennis Golding’s artwork integrated throughout.
