A shower leak took the third floor of a Little Italy semi out of service; a retreat gave it back. Everything up here resolves into something larger than itself: tub into shower, closet into wall, daylight through glass into the windowless middle of the plan, and the terrace into a proper room, held by cedar and roofed by a pergola that takes the rain without taking the sky. The floor is exactly the size it always was. It simply became one idea about how two people begin and end a day.
