Working with an existing building that houses two fundamentally different programs, an exhibition hall and a production studio, we naturally began to question: What does it mean to make an addition? What kind of art collective is our project, INTERSTICE, for the artist, the audience, and, most importantly, for the Santa Monica community? Although the massing and programs appear separate, it is the voids—infused with community-oriented programs that connect the old and new, the artist and the public. Each part is designed to function independently, but together, they form a cohesive whole.
