Sebastian Piórek, a distinguished architectural and landscape photographer based in Warsaw, Poland, has a unique approach to photography that focuses on minimalism and profound simplicity. His award-winning project, “Playground,” captured in Chorzów, Poland, and honored by the Architecture Photography MasterPrize, showcases his exceptional skills and dedication to his craft. We had the pleasure of speaking with Sebastian to gain deeper insights into his photographic approach and the inspirations behind his remarkable work.
Sebastian Piórek: I am an architecture and landscape photographer based in Warsaw, Poland. My photographic approach is deeply rooted in minimalism, focusing on creating images that are simple yet deeply meaningful. In a world saturated with technical and visual information, my work serves as a peaceful retreat, inviting viewers to pause and engage with their surroundings in a more thoughtful and reflective way. Through my photography, I aim to encourage a fresh perspective on reality, urging viewers to reflect on concepts of time and existence. This intentional focus on minimalism not only defines the aesthetic of my photographs but also represents my philosophical approach to life and art.
Sebastian Piórek: The project centered around capturing the essence and unique presence of a vibrant, colorful playground located in the industrially robust and urban setting of southern Poland. This area, traditionally recognized for its mines and stark architectural character, provided a contrasting backdrop to the playful and inviting nature of the playground. The task was to show this playground not only as a rare and joyful escape within the urban landscape but also to highlight its beauty from an aerial perspective at the break of dawn, emphasizing how such spaces serve as bright spots of joy and color in otherwise monochrome environments. The goal was to present the playground as a “pearl” both grounded in its community and outstanding when viewed from above, illustrating its significance and impact on the area.
Sebastian Piórek: The design process was detailed and carefully planned to align with specific environmental and seasonal conditions. The playground, situated 300 kilometers away from my home in Warsaw, required strategic planning for travel to the southern part of Poland. I aimed to visit during a particular time of year—late autumn—when the foliage would not only thin out to avoid obscuring the playground’s “frame” but also take on the vibrant, complementary colors of the season, enhancing the morning light. I monitored weather patterns and tree foliage changes closely to choose the optimal day for the shoot. This attention to detail ensured that the natural elements would beautifully frame and emphasize the playground, highlighting its colors and design against the urban environment. The planning and patience paid off, allowing me to capture the playground in its most striking state, bathed in the early morning light that highlighted its joyful and vivid character.
Sebastian Piórek: Several challenges arose throughout the process of capturing the playground. One of the primary obstacles was the dependency on weather conditions. I needed several consecutive days of good weather—specifically, mornings without rain, clouds, and with clear sunlight—to ensure the lighting would perfectly highlight the vivid colors and shadows of the playground. This requirement made scheduling the shoot more complex, as I had to continuously monitor weather forecasts and be ready to travel on short notice.
Additionally, capturing the playground without any people present was crucial for the aesthetic I wanted to achieve. This requirement dictated the timing of the shoot, which had to be early in the morning, right after sunrise on a Sunday, when most people were still likely to be asleep. This timing helped ensure that the playground would be empty and bathed in the soft, golden light of the early sun, highlighting its colors and structure without human interference.
Finally, a minor yet notable challenge occurred just as I was about to launch the drone. A dog, attracted by the noise of the drone, began to run towards the aircraft. This unexpected situation required quick thinking and careful handling to ensure the drone could be launched safely without disturbing the dog or causing any accidents.
Sebastian Piórek: The most innovative aspect is the integration of the concrete platform with colorful elements and nature. The openings in the concrete allow natural elements to thrive alongside human activity, creating a dynamic and interactive space that blends architecture with the landscape.
Sebastian Piórek: Firstly, the international recognition the photograph has received is immensely rewarding. It not only highlights my work but also shines a spotlight on a region typically known for its industrial and urban character. By showcasing this playground, the photo presents a different narrative for the area, one that emphasizes creativity and modern design seamlessly integrated with traditional elements like concrete, which is symbolic of the region’s industrial heritage.
Additionally, I take great pride in having captured and conveyed the essence of how modern design can be harmoniously blended with typical elements of a region. This photograph challenges and expands the perception of an area predominantly recognized for its mines and stark architecture, illustrating that such places can also be vibrant centers of community and creativity. The project highlights the region’s potential for transformation and renewal through thoughtful and innovative design.
Sebastian Piórek: My passion for capturing and expressing the subtle details of space and environment through visual narratives led me to become a photographer. Photography allows me to explore and document the interaction between human-made structures and natural environments, highlighting the beauty and complexity of architectural designs.
Sebastian Piórek: I admire the work of Julius Shulman, whose architectural photography captures the essence of modern architecture with profound clarity and emotion. His ability to convey the spirit of an architectural work through photography has been a significant influence on my approach.
Sebastian Piórek: I would choose the Fallingwater House designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Its innovative use of organic architecture that harmoniously integrates with its natural surroundings represents the principles of design that I most admire—blending form, function, and environment like my project “Playground“.
Sebastian Piórek: The increasing use of virtual reality and 3D modeling technologies in architecture is transforming how we visualize and experience space. Social changes like increasing environmental consciousness and the need for sustainable design will continue to drive innovation in architectural practices.
Sebastian Piórek: By highlighting and promoting sustainable, inclusive, and aesthetically compelling designs, architectural photography plays a critical role in influencing public perceptions and priorities regarding the built environment, encouraging more thoughtful and responsible design practices.
Sebastian Piórek: Receiving the Architecture Photography MasterPrize is profoundly gratifying as it recognizes the artistic and technical effort involved in architectural photography. This recognition not only elevates my profile as a photographer but also enhances my ability to collaborate on more ambitious projects, pushing the boundaries of architectural expression and documentation.
We sincerely thank Sebastian Piórek for sharing his insights and showcasing his exceptional work on the “Playground.” His commitment to capturing the essence of architecture and landscape through photography is incredibly inspiring, highlighting the significant influence that thoughtfully designed spaces can have on our lives and communities.
