Located on Nuns’ Island in Montréal, the twin Darwin Bridges enable pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross under the boulevard’s four traffic lanes and enter West Vancouver Park. The design’s curved formwork and rounded architectural patterns fit seamlessly into an iconic site next to the St-Lawrence River. They are the first bridges in the world to use glass powder concrete, a new material that incorporates finely-ground recycled glass. The use of glass powder as supplementary cementitious material helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 tons.
