The car park for a new urban development in Sunderland, in England's north-east, was clad by Tonkin Liu architects in a perforated metal that suggests the waves of the nearby North Sea and the River Wear. During the day it reflects the changing nature of the sunlight that hits it and the clouds that pass overhead, sometimes bright with light, sometimes seen in silhouette. At night the surface is used as a background for artificial lighting, usually a watery green and blue, but programmable for events such as Pride week or games by the local team, who play in red and white.
