It was designed by Camilo Rebelo and Tiago Pimentel, a team of architects from Porto. Construction began in January 2007 and it opened on July 30, 2010. The building's conception stems from the idea that "Paleolithic art in the Côa Valley is perhaps the first manifestation of Land art. Although it is one of the largest Portuguese museums, it sits gracefully, with part of its volume seemingly embedded in the hilltop that, on its left bank, overlooks the mouth of the Côa River, celebrating the intersection of the region's two world heritage sites:the Prehistoric Art of the Côa Valley and Douro.
