The inaugural AAP Architecture Prize envisions a strong legacy of recognizing and celebrating creative architectural design and innovation around the world. In order to advance the appreciation of the best in global architecture, the APP is pursuing the finest in talented submissions. The winners of this exciting event will be honored at the Winners Cocktail Evening taking place in New York City in the fall of 2016.

The regular deadline is fast approaching, with project submissions due by July 31, 2016. There are 41 categories within the 3 main disciplines of Architecture, Interior Design, and Landscape Architecture to choose from. Submissions are accepted from professional firms, university students, and independent designers from all around the world, giving the AAP the opportunity to showcase designs on an unparalleled depth in the architectural world.

The judging process will include evaluation from an outstandingly prominent panel of jurors including design companies, media, museums, universities, and celebrated architects.

The recent early bird stage of the program has already exceeded expectations. Hundreds of submissions from over 50 countries has yielded work of the highest calibre, setting a solid foundation as the award continues to unfold.

AAP co-founder Hossein Farmani has said, “We are overjoyed at the resounding success of the early bird phase here at the start of AAP. We believe prizes like AAP offer architects and designers the chance to measure their own success and pursue more innovation and creativity in their profession. Winners of the award can look forward to extensive publicity of their work targeted at a global audience of designers and their firms profiled through various media outlets including the AAP Architect Directory. The Architect, Interior Designer, and Landscape Architect of the Year will all receive the AAP Trophy, and winners of Gold, Silver, and Bronze levels will be recognized with a Certificate of Achievement and a Winner’s Seal to demonstrate success and to promote their accomplishments.

The AAP Architecture Prize is open to submissions from architects and interior designers around the world. Celebrating innovation and honouring creativity, AAP is pleased to welcome five new members from the United States, Canada, Brazil, Italy, and Slovenia to our esteemed jury which includes Cesar Pelli, Joshua Jih Pan, Clement Blanchet, Alejandro Zaera-Polo, and Troy C. Therrien.

Jennifer Siegal is the founder and principal of the Los Angeles based firm Office of Mobile Design (OMD). She won the 2016 arcVision Prize “Women and Architecture”. She was unanimously chosen by the jury for being fearless pioneer in the research and development of prefabricated construction systems.

Elsa Lam is editor-in-chief of Canadian Architect magazine. Lam was the 2012 winner of the Phyllis Lambert Prize for writing in architecture, awarded for her doctoral dissertation Wilderness Nation: Building Canada’s Railway Landscapes, 1885-1929, completed at Columbia University in the City of New York.

Carla Juaçaba developed her independent practice of architecture and research based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her office is currently engaged in both public and private projects, focusing on housing and cultural programs. She is constantly a part of the academic and teaching realms, as well as research studies, and lectures. She won the first edition of the international prize ArcVision Women and Architecture in 2013, and recently was nominated for the Schelling Architecture Award 2014.

Elisa Burnazzi co-founded the practice Burnazzi Feltrin Architects with offices in Trento and Rimini (Italy). Burnazzi has been shortlisted for the international award ‘The Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture’ aimed to emerging women architects. This year the website Archdaily has listed her among the 15 women architects who have designed exceptional projects all over the world.

Spela Videcnik, a graduate of the Ljubljana School of Architecture and London’s Architectural Association, co-founded OFIS arhitekti in 1996 based in Ljubljana and Paris. She teaches, runs studios and workshops in various schools for architecture including Harvard Graduate School of Design, ENSA Paris Val de Seine and Faculty for Architecture in Ljubljana.

Setting a benchmark for excellence in the field, the AAP Architecture Prize is welcoming submissions from architects and interior designers across the world. Promoting creativity, the fair and transparent judging process with an international panel of jurors is essential to the success of the award. Therefore, AAP is glad to introduce two new judges: Alan Ricks and Michael Murphy – founders of MASS Design Group.

Michael Murphy is the executive director of MASS Design Group, which he founded in 2010. Michael leads design and research programs at MASS and has overseen the expansion of MASS into ten countries and three continents. He regularly speaks on architecture and health care, and sits on the boards of the Clinton Global Initiative Advisory Committee, the Harvard Graduate School of Design Alumni Board, and the Center for Healthcare Design. Michael holds a Master in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Alan Ricks co-founded MASS Design Group and as Chief Operating Officer manages global operations. Projects range from design to research to policy — a portfolio that continues to expand the role of design in advancing a more equitable world.

Alan was appointed as an Expert-in-Residence at the Harvard Innovation Lab and is a Young Global Leader with the World Economic Forum for the 2014-2019 term. He recently gave a TED Talk, which chief TED curator Chris Anderson described as “a different language about what architecture can aspire to be.”

Alan is a regular lecturer at Harvard, where he received his Masters of Architecture, and is a frequent speaker and writer on the role of architecture in catalyzing social change.

The mission of the AAP Architecture Prize is to encourage innovation and award excellence in architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture. AAP announces the opening of the first AAP Architecture Prize, honoring the most outstanding design and architecture worldwide. AAP is set to recognize exceptional talent in the industry.

AAP’s goal is to “shed a spotlight on the most talented and innovative architects and interior designers, creating a standard of achievement for all architectural designs internationally” says Hossein Farmani, the President of AAP.

Cesar Pelli, a renowned Argentine-American architect noted for his work designing the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, has joined the AAP panel of jurors. Known for designing some of the world’s tallest buildings and other major urban landmarks, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) listed Pelli among the ten most influential living American architects in 1991. Pelli is a recipient of 1995 AIA Gold Medal. Among his other achievements, Pelli also designed the World Financial Center complex in downtown Manhattan.

Clément Blanchet, a prominent French architect known for his work with Rem Koolhaas and Office for Metropolitan Architecture in France, has also joined the AAP list of jurors. Blanchet teaches at Paris Val de Seine Architectural School and ESA. He divides his time between his firm in Paris and the United States where he also teaches at the University of Michigan and Rice University.

In this year’s competition, AAP offers unique categories in within the disciplines of architectural design, landscape architecture, and interior design that focus on the best achievements in architecture from the last five years

We are pleased to announce that Troy C. Therrien, the Curator of Architecture and Digital Initiatives at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum, has joined the AAP Jury. Trained in computer engineering and later in architecture design, history, theory and criticism, Troy’s work combines architecture and technology. Troy teaches design and research seminars on connecting digital and physical space at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. He holds an M.A. in History and Theory from the Architectural Association, an M.Arch from Columbia where he was awarded the AIA medal as the top all around graduating student, and a B.A.Sc. from the University of British Columbia. Troy was previously the Chief Architect of Digital Communications and Research.

All AAP entries are evaluated by the esteemed panel of jurors, including world-renowned architects, luminaries from media, art and technology. “We are very pleased to have Troy Therrien being part of our jury panel. His expertise is an invaluable addition to the AAP, ensuring that judging will be at the highest calibre,” says Hossein Farmani, the President of AAP.
