Setting a benchmark for excellence in the field, the AAP Architecture Prize is welcoming submissions from architects and interior designers across the world. Promoting creativity, the fair and transparent judging process with an international panel of jurors is essential to the success of the award. Therefore, AAP is glad to introduce two new judges: Alan Ricks and Michael Murphy – founders of MASS Design Group.
Michael Murphy is the executive director of MASS Design Group, which he founded in 2010. Michael leads design and research programs at MASS and has overseen the expansion of MASS into ten countries and three continents. He regularly speaks on architecture and health care, and sits on the boards of the Clinton Global Initiative Advisory Committee, the Harvard Graduate School of Design Alumni Board, and the Center for Healthcare Design. Michael holds a Master in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Alan Ricks co-founded MASS Design Group and as Chief Operating Officer manages global operations. Projects range from design to research to policy — a portfolio that continues to expand the role of design in advancing a more equitable world.
Alan was appointed as an Expert-in-Residence at the Harvard Innovation Lab and is a Young Global Leader with the World Economic Forum for the 2014-2019 term. He recently gave a TED Talk, which chief TED curator Chris Anderson described as “a different language about what architecture can aspire to be.”
Alan is a regular lecturer at Harvard, where he received his Masters of Architecture, and is a frequent speaker and writer on the role of architecture in catalyzing social change.
The mission of the AAP Architecture Prize is to encourage innovation and award excellence in architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture. AAP announces the opening of the first AAP Architecture Prize, honoring the most outstanding design and architecture worldwide. AAP is set to recognize exceptional talent in the industry.
AAP’s goal is to “shed a spotlight on the most talented and innovative architects and interior designers, creating a standard of achievement for all architectural designs internationally” says Hossein Farmani, the President of AAP.
The judging process will include evaluation from prominent panel of jurors including design companies, media, museums, universities, and celebrated architects like Cesar Pelli and Clément Blanchet.
Cesar Pelli, a renowned Argentine-American architect noted for his work designing the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, has joined the AAP panel of jurors. Known for designing some of the world’s tallest buildings and other major urban landmarks, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) listed Pelli among the ten most influential living American architects in 1991. Pelli is a recipient of 1995 AIA Gold Medal. Among his other achievements, Pelli also designed the World Financial Center complex in downtown Manhattan.
Clément Blanchet, a prominent French architect known for his work with Rem Koolhaas and Office for Metropolitan Architecture in France, has also joined the AAP list of jurors. Blanchet teaches at Paris Val de Seine Architectural School and ESA. He divides his time between his firm in Paris and the United States where he also teaches at the University of Michigan and Rice University.
In this year’s competition, AAP offers unique categories in within the disciplines of architectural design, landscape architecture, and interior design that focus on the best achievements in architecture from the last five years

We are pleased to announce that Troy C. Therrien, the Curator of Architecture and Digital Initiatives at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Museum, has joined the AAP Jury. Trained in computer engineering and later in architecture design, history, theory and criticism, Troy’s work combines architecture and technology. Troy teaches design and research seminars on connecting digital and physical space at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. He holds an M.A. in History and Theory from the Architectural Association, an M.Arch from Columbia where he was awarded the AIA medal as the top all around graduating student, and a B.A.Sc. from the University of British Columbia. Troy was previously the Chief Architect of Digital Communications and Research.
All AAP entries are evaluated by the esteemed panel of jurors, including world-renowned architects, luminaries from media, art and technology. “We are very pleased to have Troy Therrien being part of our jury panel. His expertise is an invaluable addition to the AAP, ensuring that judging will be at the highest calibre,” says Hossein Farmani, the President of AAP.
