Inside Czechia’s Tallest Timber Office Building: Studio Perspektiv on the Best Green Architecture Design
As one of the standout winners in the Green Architecture category at the 2025 Architecture MasterPrize, BudexHUB showcases how sustainable design, engineered timber, and digital innovation can redefine the modern workplace. Designed by Studio Perspektiv, with lead architects Ján Antal, Martin Stára, and Eva Schilhart Faberová, the project is the tallest wooden office building in the Czech Republic and a benchmark for contemporary timber construction. We spoke with Ján Antal to learn more about the vision, challenges, and innovations behind this pioneering project.
Could you share some background about yourself or your practice?
Ján Antal: Studio Perspektiv is a Czech architecture and design practice focused on contemporary architecture where strong design, technical clarity, and long-term performance go hand in hand. Our work often sits at the intersection of architecture, urban design, interiors, and technology, treating every building as both a spatial experience and a carefully coordinated system. In recent years, we’ve increasingly specialized in low-carbon architecture and timber construction, using BIM as a core tool to manage complexity, coordinate stakeholders, and preserve design intent from concept through completion.
What was the brief for the award-winning BudexHUB?
Ján Antal: BudexHUB originally began as a request for an interior proposal for administrative spaces within a prefabricated building. As discussions evolved, it became clear that the client wanted something far more ambitious—a headquarters that truly reflected the company’s values of sustainability, innovation, and design. The project ultimately developed into a four-storey passive-standard timber office building, integrated within a broader campus showcasing renewable energy technologies and modern construction.
Please describe your design process and how you approached BudexHUB.
Ján Antal: The project began with extensive research because multi-storey timber office buildings were still uncommon in the Czech Republic. We visited existing projects, evaluated different structural systems, and collaborated closely with engineers and specialists. BIM in Autodesk Revit became the backbone of the design process, allowing seamless coordination, cost control, and technical precision. We also created a VR model so the client could experience the building before construction. Architecturally, we combined a reinforced concrete core for structural stability with exposed timber elements that celebrate the warmth and character of wood throughout the interior.
What were the main challenges during the project, and how did you resolve them?
Ján Antal: One major challenge was pioneering a relatively unfamiliar building typology in the local market, which required educating stakeholders and carefully evaluating different timber systems. Another was coordinating mechanical systems within timber structures, where openings and penetrations require exceptional precision. We relied on BIM-based clash detection, detailed coordination workshops, and close collaboration between designers and contractors. Managing the interfaces between timber and concrete also demanded meticulous detailing and early validation through prototypes.
What do you consider the most distinctive or innovative aspect of the project?
Ján Antal: BudexHUB combines three key ambitions into one cohesive concept: creating a four-storey timber office building at the local height limit, exposing timber as a defining architectural feature rather than concealing it, and integrating renewable energy systems throughout the campus so sustainability becomes part of the building’s everyday operation rather than simply a certification.
Which outcomes of BudexHUB are you most proud of, and why?
Ján Antal: We’re especially proud that BudexHUB demonstrates timber construction as a credible solution for large-scale corporate headquarters. The building delivers a healthy and comfortable workplace while proving that complex timber architecture can be delivered with precision through digital coordination, prefabrication, and thoughtful detailing. More importantly, we hope it helps change perceptions about multi-storey timber buildings in the Czech market.
What inspires your work, and who or what has had the strongest influence on your approach within your discipline?
Ján Antal: We’re inspired by architecture that honestly expresses its structure, materials, and performance. Timber construction, in particular, teaches humility by rewarding clarity, precision, and craftsmanship. Just as important is collaboration itself. Clients with strong values and expert project partners continually push our work further, and BudexHUB is a perfect example of how genuine collaboration can drive meaningful innovation.
What does receiving the Architecture MasterPrize mean to you, and how do you see it influencing your future work or practice?
Ján Antal: Receiving an Architecture MasterPrize is valuable international recognition of our work. It gives us additional momentum to continue advancing multi-storey timber architecture and hybrid construction systems while strengthening trust with future clients who may still be cautious about these innovative building approaches.
