West Dean College / Head of KLC School of Design

Geoffrey Makstutis studied architecture at the University of Michigan and the Architectural Association, London. He is the Head of KLC School of Design, part of West Dean College. Appointed in 2022, following  the merger of KLC and West Dean, he is leading the integration of the School within the College as well as developing new subject areas  and enhancing teaching and learning across all programmes.

Prior to joining West Dean, Geoffrey Makstutis was the Subject Lead for Construction, Art, Design and Media for Pearson’s Higher Education team. He was also, for 12 years, the head of the undergraduate architecture programme at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London; where he developed the programme and led on the achievement of professional recognition for the subject. In addition, he has lectured and been external examiner at the Architectural Association, University of Westminster, Royal College of Art, Glasgow School of Art, Hong Kong Design Institute, University of Lincoln, University of Hertfordshire, Universitat Politècnica de València, University of the Creative Arts, and London School of Economics.

Prior to moving into academia, Geoffrey Makstutis worked as a practicing architect in the US and the UK on projects ranging from small residential to commercial and retail projects as well as cultural institutions, in the UK, US, Europe and Japan.

Geoffrey Makstutis has written extensively on architecture, design and education. He has written two books for Lawrence King Publishers. “Architecture: An Introduction” was published in 2010 and “Design Process in Architecture” in 2018. He has also published numerous articles on construction, art, media, architecture and education.
